Understanding the difference between language and speech is pivotal to grokking the thesis of Leslie Dewart’s masterwork, Evolution and Consciousness. Speech is assertive communication, whereas language is a system of signs wherewith to speak. Our cultural preoccupation with language at the expense of speech is a symptom of the absent-mindedness characteristic of our ontic consciousness. Dewart calls this the “semantic complex”.
